Abby Dabby Ice Cream Shop Settles in at Bishop's Corner
Family-owned store offers all natural ice cream, Avery's soda, and warm drinks as well.
Tucked into the line of businesses near the Subway at Bishop's Corner is a new family-owned ice cream shop that offers all-natural products, local baked goods and Avery's soda from New Britain.
Abby Dabby opened last fall and has been spreading the word through its customers, but owners Jason and Leslie Congdon want everyone to know that ice cream tastes just as good with three feet of snow on the ground as it does in the summer.
“I was born and raised in West Hartford," Congdon said. "We wanted our children and our community to have a shop where we could enjoy ice cream and other treats, just as we had. Abby Dabby is filling a niche that has not been around for a while.”
The shop was named after their youngest daughter, yes, Abby, who is just 4 years old. Their older children are, Max, 10, and Tori, 8.
Abby Dabby offers two brands of ice cream, both of them all natural, with no artificial colors or sweeteners. One is called Walpole Creamery, from New Hampshire, and the other, voted “Best in Connecticut” by Connecticut Magazine, is called Ashleys, from New Haven.
Congdon said his goal was to “make it as healthy as possible.”
Abby Dabby offers old-fashioned soda as well. It is delivered twice a week from Avery’s in New Britain. It is used in the ice cream floats, and you can purchase a bottle to carry out.
In addition, the shop offers sundaes with homemade chocolate syrup, shakes, soft serve ice cream, ice cream cakes, cones and more.
“I was hoping to create something different and unique, “Congdon explained, as he showed off the Abbywich. It is a cookie sandwich, where the customer can choose not only the ice cream flavor, but also the type of cookies used.
Abby Dabby also offers “Dabbies," which are soft serve ice cream treats with a variety of mixed-in toppings. Again, the customer can decide on the combination of goodies. For example, Abby Dabby’s carries more than 12 colors of sprinkles.
“A local baker helps out with the baked goods,” Congdon said of the brownies, bars and cookies, and the shop carries gluten-free and low-sugar offerings as well.
Congdon also looked for something to warm customers up in the winter and found Pierce Brother’s Coffee and Hot Chocolate.
Congdon wants customers to “feel comfortable, like it is a place of your own.”
