[Patch Poll] What's the Worst Song Ever?

Is your song not on the list? Vote for "Other" and tell us in the comments.

"De gustibus non est disputandum"

It's a Latin phrase that, loosely translated, means it is foolish to dispute someone else’s tastes. Nowhere is this more evident than in music, where one person’s sonic trash is another person’s aural treasure.

I became offended when a friend of mine suggested “Closing Time” by Semisonic as one that should be on this list. I LOVE that song, which means my friend clearly needs therapy. Naturally, with my Bosswoman (who normally puts together the Monday polls) away on vacation, I'm going to tackle a highly subjective, eternal question: what’s the worst song ever?

Here are my top - or bottom, depending on how you look at it - three worst songs ever; cast your vote for one of the following or, if you answer “Other,” please list your least-favorite musical non-masterpiece.

"We Built This City" [Original artist: Starship] - The gold standard of awful, this ditty was named the worst song of all time by Blender magazine in 2004. As Florida resident Jeff Lesserson says, “I don't even think they tried with those lyrics.” Hard to argue when Grace Slick is whining, “Someone always playing corporation games/Who cares? They’re always changing corporation names.” This coming from a woman whose band changed its name from Jefferson Airplane to Jefferson Starship to Starship. Well played, Grace. Oh and the beat so so milquetoast, I’m pretty sure it’s the soundtrack to purgatory.

Sussudio” [Phil Collins] - It’s true that one awful Phil Collins song gives rise to another Phil Collins song, until we are left staring into the black pit of our souls. Sussudio isn’t a word. At best, it’s lazy writing, at worst, it’s just dumb. But it’s also not the first time Collins has been guilty of such boring word construction. The chorus in Genesis’ song “ABACAB” is about the notes to the accompanying music. Feel shame, Phil.

Who Let the Dogs Out?” [Baha Men] - Thank you Baha Men for giving lazy sports arena DJs everywhere a compendium to “We Will Rock You” and “YMCA.” The Baha Men are the musical equivalent of herpes. Yeah, sure it may sound like fun once you get them, but you quickly realize that you can't get rid of them.

"Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro - if this song comes on the radio, I want to stick my head out the window and hope a semi gets it.

Those are all excellent choices, most especially "Sussudio", but "Aqualung" by Jethro Tull is the one that gets me to change the radio station.

"A Horse With No Name" has some of the dumbest lyrics. I mean, you're out in the desert, you've got nothing else to do, so name the stinkin' horse!

Ted, I love the intro; however, if anyone really wants to learn more about "taste" rather than accepting the implications of a Latin one-liner, I suggest reading the book by Herbert Gans entitled Popular Culture and High Culture: An Analysis and Evaluation of Taste Revised and Updated. Yes, as the book title implies, there is a big difference between "Closing Time" and any Tosca aria. That's the essence of the book. Read it at your own peril !!!!
