American Legion Post 96 Elects Ken Hungerford as Post Commander
American Legion Hayes-Velhage Post 96 has elected Ken Hungerford as Post Commander to succeed Chris Conlin. Commander Hungerford has been a member of American Legion Post 96 for over 30 years and has twice served as Post Commander. A Korean War veteran, he joined the Army in 1951 and served with the 633 AAA 25th Infantry Division. Upon release from active duty in 1953, Commander Hungerford returned to West Hartford and became very active in the community. He coached West Hartford Youth Baseball for 53 years and American Legion Baseball for 8 years. In his professional career he served as Business Manager for Northwest Catholic High School while raising eight children. Other members elected to Post 96 positions include Senior Vice Commander Moe Fradette, Junior Vice Commander Brendan Boyle, Judge Advocate Robert Hyland, Finance Officer Ray Gmeindl, Chaplain Barry Leghorn, Executive Committeemen Jeff Cole and Jack Moshier. Dave Albert and Rocky Goodwin were elected to the Board of Trustees for a two year term. With a current membership of 2.4-million wartime veterans, The American Legion was founded in 1919 on the four pillars of a strong national security, veterans affairs, Americanism, and youth programs. Legionnaires work for the betterment of their communities through more than 14,000 posts across the nation. The American Legion of West Hartford is open to military veterans who have served honorably during a wartime era and military personnel currently on active duty.
