Public forum planned to discuss U.S. fiscal challenges.

A public forum will be held on Thursday, October 18th from 7pm to 9pm at Conard High School in West Hartford.  The forum, titled "Are We Nearing the Fiscal Cliff...A conversation about our nation's fiscal realities", is open to the public.

According to Paul Connery, a resident of West Hartford and the organizer of the event as well as a No Labels Citizen Leader in Connecticut, the forum will focus on the fiscal challenges facing the United States if our government can’t work effectively to solve the financial problems facing the country. “The nation’s federal debt is now almost $16 trillion, up from about $4 trillion at the end of fiscal 1992 and $5.7 trillion at the end of fiscal 2000. Even more shocking, total federal liabilities and unfunded promises now exceed $70 trillion, up from $20.4 trillion at the end of fiscal 2000. This represents an almost $50 trillion increase in just 12 years, and this amount is growing by about $10 million a minute! We also face a fiscal cliff at the end of this year.” explains Connery.  “We hope this forum will help to get people more engaged and to hold our elected officials more accountable to stop fighting and start fixing these huge problems that face our country.”

The forum will feature David Walker, CEO of the Comeback America Initiative, Brian Renstrom, a partner at Blum Shapiro, James Torgerson, CEO of The United Illuminating Company, and Kevin Lembo, Comptroller of the State of Connecticut.  The moderator of the forum will be Peter Gioia, Vice President and Economist with The Connecticut Business and Industry Association.  Among the topics to be discussed are budgeting, defense, health care, Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, politics, and taxes.

The forum is being sponsored by No Labels CT, French Cleaners of West Hartford and The Connecticut Business & Industry Association.  For more information go to CTFiscalForum.eventbrite.com or call 860-558-3396.
