Light One Candle for Hunger

Light One Candle for Hunger brought over 100 people on Wednesday evening, November 27 to The Emanuel Synagogue on the first night of Hanukkah which coincided this year with Thanksgiving.  The crowd shared the light of the Menorah, created by sculptor Hans Stargardter, enjoyed sufganiyot (jelly donuts) and cider, sang songs assisted by Hazzan Cohn and the Emanuel Choirs, heard inspiring words From Gloria McAdam of Foodshare, and Shari Cantor of the Anja Rosenberg Kosher Food Pantry. Baskets were passed to raise funds for the hungry. Josh Cohn, Sarah Cohn and Jessica Edelson presented checks to Foodshare and the Kosher Food Pantry representing funds collected by the Emanuel Religious School students at Mitzvah Day. Over $2,000 was contributed. Father Henry Cody provided a closing prayer, asking G-d to help us create a “just world.” Community partners included: Emanuel B’yadeynu, Brotherhood and Sisterhood, The Church of St. Timothy, GHRA Greater Hartford Rabbinic Association, JFACT Jewish Federation Association of CT, Foodshare and the Anja Rosenberg Kosher Food Pantry. This event was planned to be the first of many annual gatherings to widen the circle of voluntary leaders to change the conversation around hunger and end hunger in Greater Hartford.
