CUTLINE: Lourdes Torreira, Hartford, Jovaney Santiago, East Hartford, Ciara Rivera Gonzalez, Hartford, and her husband, William, also of Hartford, step out for the 2014 Walk MS, presented by Travelers, in West Hartford. Gonzalez is a longtime supporter of the National MS Society, attending fundraising events and serving as an MS spokesperson. Gonzalez, 24, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when she was just 16 years old. Torreira, a longtime friend, went to school with Gonzalez. The weekend’s Walk MS events attracted a total of more than 10,000 participants statewide. To date the 2014 Walk MS, presented by Travelers, has raised $1.1 million toward a $1.3 million goal. Walk MS individuals and teams are encouraged to continue raising funds through Friday, May 23, the official deadline for prizes. Suggestions for increasing fundraising totals include, launching letter writing campaigns, utilizing  social media networking sites to reach out to contacts and hosting fun-filled wrap around events, such as backyard barbeques, beer and wine tastings, and theme parties.
