MIRACLE LEAGUE OF CONNECTICUT - OPENING DAY

The Miracle League of Connecticut started its Spring, 2014 season on Sunday, April 27, by  participating in the Opening Day Ceremonies of the West Hartford Little League.

After many days of cloudy weather and rain, the skies brightened as the Miracle League players entered the Miracle League complex at the corner of Trout Brook Drive and Asylum Avenue in West Hartford on foot, in wheelchairs and with walkers. They all had smiles from ear to ear as the names of their teams were announced on the loud speaker.

After the Opening Day Ceremonies were completed, the Miracle League dedicated its new  Wall of Fame at the Miracle League facility.

The Wall of Fame was constructed to honor all of the people and organizations who donated money to build the facility.

Over a period of less than 3 years, the Miracle League of Connecticut raised over $800,000 to build a state of the art rubberized surface baseball field, handicapped accessible playscape and surrounding amenities, all to be used by children with special needs.  A concession stand and handicapped  accessible restroom facility will be completed this fall.

After the dedication ceremonies were completed, the teams played their first games of the season.

At 1:00 p.m., the Seadogs played the Rockhounds and at 3:00 p.m. the Scrappers played the Newington Challenger Division Team.

At the 1:00 p.m. game, the entire Farmington High School varsity baseball team was in attendance to serve as buddies for the Seadogs  and the Rockhounds. In that capacity, the varsity  baseball players served as the eyes for those children who had trouble seeing, the legs for those children who had trouble running, and the arms for those children who had trouble batting and fielding.

There were smiles on the faces of everyone: the players, the buddies and all of the family members in the stands.

At the 3:00 p.m. game between the Scrappers and the Newington Challenger Division Team,  Connecticut Mission, an Avon AAU team, served as the buddies.

After each game, the buddies posed with the players in center field below the scoreboard.

Although both games ended in a tie, the day was clearly a win-win situation for all participants.
