Scholarship to Honor Juan Castillo

The Community School of the Arts announces a scholarship fund honoring the memory of Juan Castillo.

On August 23, 2013, Juan F Castillo, an employee at the University of Connecticut for over 25 years, and long-time supporter of the visual arts programs at the Community School of the Arts (CSA), passed away due to complications of leukemia. Juan was a resident of West Hartford. 

Juan was a graphic designer at the Center for Continuing Studies where he designed many of the promotional material that CSA sends out. He was also a very enthusiastic supporter of the pottery program at CSA and was always among the first in line at the annual Pottery Sale Fundraiser each summer.

At the request of the family, a memorial fund for Juan Castillo has been set up at the UConn Foundation. The purpose of the fund is to provide support to visual arts students at the Community School of the Arts who are first generation college students and who demonstrate financial need.

Juan was also an active member of the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA), serving as an area representative on Union matters. The UCPEA executive board has announced that they will be donating $1,000 to the Juan F Castillo Memorial Scholarship Arts Fund.

This gift and others to the Fund will be applied as expendable (non-endowed) funds until the Fund is depleted. All funds raised will be administered and held by the UConn Foundation in accordance with its policies and procedures for non-endowed funds. The UConn Foundation is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization dedicated exclusively to benefiting the University. Donors to the Foundation have the right to request in writing that their gifts remain anonymous.
