St. Thomas the Apostle Blanketeers Create Handcrafted Blankets for Project Linus

Third-graders at St. Thomas the Apostle School in West Hartford recently completed a service project that will bring handcrafted blankets to children in need through the non-profit organization Project Linus.  Project Linus collects new, handcrafted blankets made by volunteer “blanketeers” and distributes them to children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need.

St. Thomas the Apostle School blanketeers and their teachers Miss Michelle Faenza and Miss Kelly Mentus purchased a variety of brightly-colored fleece decorated with flowers, sports balls, zigzags and animals.  Then, with the help of several parent and grandparent volunteers, they created beautiful no-sew blankets that will bring comfort and smiles to children of all ages and interests.  Miss Faenza and Miss Mentus will deliver the blankets to a local chapter of Project Linus in time to have them distributed to those in need this Christmas.

The timing of the service project couldn’t be better according the students’ teachers.  “The Advent season is filled with anticipation of Christmas Day and it’s easy for children to get caught up in what they want for Christmas.  This project gave them the opportunity to think about other kids who are in need of comfort due to sickness or other challenges,” she said.

“We had a lot of fun making the blankets and the students were excited to do something nice for someone else who might be struggling this season,”  added Miss Mentus.  “I’m really proud of them!”
