University of Saint Joseph Appoints Dr. Anthony De Jesús as Director of Field Education for the M.S.W. Program

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (September 23, 2013) – Anthony De Jesús, Ed.D., M.S.W., has recently joined the University of Saint Joseph as assistant professor of social work and Latino community practice. He will serve as director of field education for the master’s degree in social work (M.S.W.) program which will be offered at USJ starting in the summer of 2014. He is a resident of Hartford.

In his new role, De Jesús will oversee the development of the M.S.W. field education program in which university-employed clinical preceptors will supervise students in select partner organizations. This innovative student unit field education model will provide dynamic opportunities where classroom and field based learning are thoroughly integrated.  

“Dr. De Jesús brings a rich background of experience in social work, teaching, research, and field expertise along with an impressive record of scholarship to the University of Saint Joseph,” said USJ Provost Michelle M. Kalis, Ph.D. “He will provide a unique perspective in directing field courses that motivate and inspire graduate students while developing partnerships and networks with culturally diverse constituencies.”

Prior to joining USJ, De Jesús had served since 2007 as assistant professor at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College (CUNY). From 2003-2007 he served as research associate in education and subsequently interim director at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College (CUNY). He is the author of numerous refereed journal articles, manuscripts, book reviews, book chapters, policy reports, and op-ed pieces – many of which concern cultural, educational or diversity issues that affect the Latino community. De Jesús has served as principal investigator on a number of sponsored research initiatives and his current work includes the examination of pathway models into health and social work careers for Latinos, the post-secondary experiences of Latinos within higher education, and the effectiveness of cultural competence training in child welfare.

De Jesús earned an Ed.D. and Ed.M. from Harvard University; an M.S.W. from Boston University; and a B.S.W. from Dominican College (Orangeburg, NY). He has held fellowships at the University of Notre Dame – Institute for Latino Studies; Harvard University – Edward Meade Policy Fellowship; and Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Community Fellow (Urban Studies and Planning).
