Hall High Students Work with Senator Murphy to Cut the Federal Deficit in Mock Congressional Session

West Hartford students Alyssa Surowiec and Carolynn Humble worked with Murphy on several difficult exercises in deficit reduction.

On Thursday evening, U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and the Concord Coalition hosted a group of individuals at the University of Hartford to work on cutting the federal deficit through a interactive mock Congressional session.

In attendance were several Hall High students from teacher Colleen Peling's Advanced Placement Macro Economics class.

Hall High students Alyssa Surowiec and Carolynn Humble worked with Murphy on several difficult exercises in deficit reduction.

Surowiec said, "Although cutting costs can be a difficult decision, the true challenge was coming to a group consensus to finalize the decisions."

Actual Congressional Budget Office (CBO) numbers provided by the Concord Coalition were used to measure cost cutting and revenue generating solutions across discretionary and non-discretionary budget items.

Murphy took great interest in the representation from the generationally diverse group. He mentioned this was perfect timing for budget analysis as he returns to Washington on Monday to work on these same issues and can relay important messages he has learned from his Connecticut constituents.
