Special Outdoor Rosh Hashanah Service Held In Elizabeth Park

Congregation Beth Israel of West Hartford hosts first-ever outdoor service to celebrate the new year.

Hundreds of people were on hand at Elizabeth Park on Wednesday for a special outdoor Rosh Hashanah service sponsored by the Congregation Beth Israel of West Hartford.

Rabbis Dena Shaffer and Michael Pincus blew the shofar to usher in the year 5774.

A shofar is a horn that is blown to announce the new year and is used as a symbol to awaken, Shaffer said.

Pincus said that Elizabeth Park was chosen for the outdoor service because Rosh Hashanah is a celebration of life and the park is a beautiful place that is full of life.

In addition to the blowing of the shofar, there were songs and readings.

Rosh Hashanah runs from sundown Wednesday to sundown Friday evening.
