Strong Winds, Rain Expected to Start This Afternoon

Trees are in danger of toppling in the rain and gusts this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service is predicting a strong cold front moving through central Connecticut later today will bring heavy rain and high winds that could be strong enough to take down trees and knock power out.

According to an NWS forecast for the Hartford area from 9 a.m. Monday, the windy portion of the front is expected to arrive early this afternoon with wind gusts up to 40 mph. Because of the recent wet conditions and still-full canopies of leaves, trees may be uprooted or branches snapped by the winds. Flooding is also possible in vulnerable areas.

Even though the National Weather Service is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a government agency, it is being maintained during the federal government shutdown because "the information this site provides is necessary to protect life and property," according to a message on the weather.gov website.
