Where Do People Speed in West Hartford?

One resident asked West Hartford drivers to slow down, prompting a discussion on where people speed the most in town. Which roads do you think should be on the list?

"I am appealing to the residents of West Hartford to put their phones down, pay attention while they are behind the wheel and stop speeding! I am personally frustrated by what I see in my own neighborhood on a daily basis – cars speeding down side streets with no regard for the safety of children playing nearby."

After Swanton wrote his letter to the editor, readers chimed in with their speeding stories via the West Hartford Patch Facebook page and Patch.

What roads do you see people speeding on the most around town?

"I constantly feel pushed to speed on South Main by Rockledge (which is near two schools with people crossing the street often), and have been passed two or three times when driving 35- which is still above the speed limit. In addition, I've seen people drive through stop signs while on the phone, completely ignoring cross traffic." (Sarah)

"Any police standing outside my door on Ridgewood Rd from 7 a.m. could catch their quota for the month!" Cori Arnold via Facebook

"Webster Hill Blvd (a school street) is like a speedway, drives me nuts! Hardly ever do I see any tickets being issued." Helen Tekce via Facebook

"Yes! People drive crazy in west hartford! I live by fernridge park and I am constantly always hit when trying to pull out onto Fern Road. The parking lot for wholefood (sic) and the area surrounding Blue back square is just as bad! Please slow down!" Jamie-Lyn Hadgkiss via Facebook

"We live on Overbrook Rd. and EVERYBODY drives right through the stop sign. I'm not sure if people think they are driving on the highway or not!!! How I wish our road had speed bumps." Lisa Reck via Facebook

Does West Hartford need more stop signs?

"There isn't even a stop sign at the main crosswalk for Morley school (where something like 90% of the school population walks) and you should see the speeds drivers zoom by at. And that's WITH a crossing guard around. It's shocking no kids have been killed recently." Lynne Lachman Cohen

What's the solution?

"I moved from Ohio where people drove the speed limit and obeyed cell phone laws because people were pulled over routinely. Driving here was a shock to my system." Courtney Hall Lee via Facebook

Do you think Connecticut is more lax with enforcing speed and cell phone laws than other states?

Dennis J. Swanton commented too and said: "I am running for Town Council, this is the center of my agenda. We need education and help. If you are interested I would like to hear from you."
