Artists Paint Bus Shelters For West Hartford ArtWalk

No, that isn't graffiti that artists Mel Bloom and Ben Keller are painting on the bus shelter at the corner of South Main Street and Farmington Avenue.

The Willimantic-based artists - formally known as MBK Murals - are one of 10 teams commissioned for the 10th annual ArtWalk, sponsored by the West Hartford Art League.

Ten bus shelters all over town will be painted in some fashion, according to Art League Executive Director Roxanne Stachelek.

Bloom and Keller, for their part, are painting a mural of a historical photo of Asylum Street in Hartford on the outside of the shelter. On the inside, there will be a collage of railroad posters from the 1890s.

Bloom said the experience of painting the mural has been terrific.

"We love talking to people," she said.

The artists have until Sept. 14 to complete their work, in preparation of the ArtWalk on Sept.15.

The artwork will eventually be removed in the spring 2014.
