At Over 1,760 lbs., Giant Pumpkin Sets State Record at Durham Fair

Rocky Hill grower Matthew DeBacco's entry set the record for heaviest pumpkin ever at both the fair and in the state of Connecticut.

The Durham Fair has announced it is now the home of the heaviest pumpkin ever weighed in the state of Connecticut.

The fair held its annual pumpkin weigh-in Wednesday evening, and it announced that the heaviest gourd came in at a whopping 1,766.5 lbs., breaking last year's record of 1,613.5 lbs.

Rocky Hill resident Matthew DeBacco, who runs the organizationTeam Pumpkin, is the grower behind the 2013 record-setting entry.

“It was a tough season with all the rain in the spring, hot summer and cold nights," DeBacco said in a statement from the Durham Fair. "I lost five pumpkins and took meticulous care of this one. I’m proud to take the new record.”

DeBacco, 29, is now stranger to the pumpkin growing craft. He's been doing it for eight years, and he previously set the fair record in 2011 with a pumpkin at 1,478 lbs.

The Durham Fair opens its doors at 4 p.m. today, Sept. 26, and will run until Sunday, Sept. 29.
