Concert Re-Scheduled: West Hartford Symphony Orchestra “Tenth Anniversary Celebration Concert”

The West Hartford Symphony Orchestra “Tenth Anniversary Celebration Concert,” postponed by the late-October snowstorm, HAS BEEN RE-SCHEDULED for January 22, 2012.

The West Hartford Symphony Orchestra, conducted by music director Richard Chiarappa, will perform its “Tenth Anniversary Celebration Concert” Sunday January 22, 3:00 pm, at the Roberts Theater on the campus of Kingswood-Oxford School, 170 Kingswood Road, West Hartford. This program was originally scheduled for October 30 but was postponed due to the snowstorm.

The program’s theme reflects “favorite movements/favorite moments” requested by our audience from past seasons. In performance will be excerpts from Borodin’s “Symphony No. 2,” Hartford resident Albert Hurwit’s “Symphony No.1,” Dvorak’s “Symphony No. 8,” and Sibelius’ “Finlandia.” Returning to the WHSO will be tenor David Baker, singing an aria from Donizetti’s “The Elixir of Love.” Choruses from Kingswood-Oxford School and Northwest Catholic High School will perform as well.

In recognition of achieving its 10th anniversary season the West Hartford Symphony Orchestra was presented with a proclamation by the Town Council at its September 13, 2011 meeting. Following a unanimous motion to suspend the rules and go immediately to the presentation, Mayor Scott Slifka addressed the audience. The Proclamation, which acknowledged the Orchestra’s Mission Statement “Bringing people together through music,” reads in part

“WHEREAS, the West Hartford Symphony Orchestra is celebrating its tenth anniversary season…

WHEREAS, the West Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s love for music is shared with the community by playing a wide range of music…

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that on behalf of the Town Council and the residents of West Hartford, I, Mayor R. Scott Slifka, do hereby extend our best wishes to the West Hartford Symphony Orchestra on this special occasion and for continued years of success in providing orchestral concerts of excellence for people of all ages.”

“This kind of support and recognition from the West Hartford community is a great honor,” said Richard Chiarappa afterward, “especially coming at a time when many arts organizations are closing or going bankrupt.”
