CT Forum, conversations that last beyond the end of the show.

Last night we joined a packed house at the Bushnell to listen to Dan Savage, Martina Navratilova, Bishop Gene Robinson (the first openly gay Bishop,) and Jonathon Capehart in their conversation about 'Being Gay.'

Not being gay, but having several close gay friends and a very liberal mindset, "Being Gay"was predictably (it is The CT Forum) thought-provoking. It began with a moving and surprising arrangement of coming out stories which later inspired an endless sharing of similar stories during intermission.

What was most impressive, was these 4 people on this stage had nothing in common... except the fact they were gay. The camaraderie on that stage spoke volumes to the persecution they are still experiencing.  Bishop Robinson shared a story of a man apprehended on the way to his home. The police shared that the man had plans to kill the Bishop because of his sexuality.

As young professionals, this generation holds the ability to make a difference. This generation can allow race and sexual orientation to become incredulous stories of unreasonable stereotypes shared by future grandparents. Last night held hope that this reality could be upon us. It also brought up surprising awareness of the actions of the ignorant.

It was one of those events where you were completely compelled to gather in a cool coffee house with 20 of your closest friends and continue the dialogue.

Unfortunately, there is no place like that near the Bushnell.... but we might have an idea for the next Forum (which, by the way, is "Big Thinkers" with Malcolm Gladwell and Douglas Brinkley)  Members, be sure to join us for this one, and save time for compelling conversation after!
