Apartment Deal on the Table for Sisters of Saint Joseph

New York developer proposes converting convent into apartment building.

A century-old convent at 26 Park Road and Prospect Street could be converted into a large apartment complex if the Sisters of Saint Joseph accept an offer from a New York developer.

Center Development Corp., which built the Park Place Towers in Hartford, has approached the Sisters about purchasing the 22-acre parcel to build Chambery Estates, a more than 400-unit apartment complex targeted at young adults and seniors, the Hartford Business Journal reported.

The Sisters, who still live in the convent, put out a request for proposals earlier this year, according to the Hartford Courant. The property is valued at $14.96 million and includes the 185,000-square-foot convent, a chapel and the grounds.

The project would be good for West Hartford, Town Manager Ronald. F. Van Winkle told the Courant. It would also include housing for the sisters.

West Hartford Community Services Director Rob Rowlson told the HBJ that the project would one of the 10 largest in the town’s history.
