UConn Chooses Hartford Times Building for Relocation of Campus

West Hartford campus would move by 2016 or 2017.

The University of Connecticut is looking to move its West Hartford campus to the former Hartford Times building, according to a Hartford Courant article.

The 1920s neoclassical building, is located on Prospect Street in the center of downtown Hartford. It is already owned by the state, the article says, but HB Nitkin Group, a developer in the Front Street district, has development rights.

To go forward with the new location, the university must negotiate an agreement with HB Nitkin and get approval from the UConn board of trustees. If it cannot get full approval, the university may pursue other locations.

According to the article, the move is planned for 2016 or 2017 and will bring more than 2,200 students and 300 faculty and staff to Hartford's downtown.

According to a previous Patch article, the school's athletic fields and the Miracle League field will convey to West Hartford after the move. Mayor Scott Slifka told Patch that the University of Saint Joseph and University of Hartford had expressed interest in the UConn campus site.
