West Hartford Business Buzz May 19: Openings, Closings and Other News

A round-up of West Hartford business news.

People in West Hartford love to be "in the know" about happenings in town, especially the openings — and closings — of local businesses. We hear things all the time, and some of them turn into big stories. But sometimes we don't have enough news to write an entire story, even though the information is definitely newsworthy. For a while we ran a "Visions for Vacancies" feature on Sundays, but it was getting to be difficult to find vacancies every week.

Every Sunday we'll highlight the business stories you may have missed during the past week, and give you the scoop on the other news you may not have heard about. And if you have tips about businesses opening or closing, please include them in the comments or send an email to ronni.newton@patch.com.

  • Kiehl's Since 1851 held a ribbon-cutting Friday afternoon at Westfarms Mall – the company's first Connecticut location. A performance of "Seussical the Musical Jr." by the Hartford Stage Musical Theater Caberet Troupe and free samples for customers highlighted the event.
  • When residents ask questions about businesses, Patch does its best to find out the answer. A reader posted a question on the West Hartford Patch Facebook page Thursday morning, wondering what was happening at Blue Elephant Trail in the Center because the sign was down and the area in front of the restaurant was full of construction materials. We found out that the Thai favorite was merely doing some minor renovation, including installation of a new front window.
  • Richardson & Richardson, which specialized in antique and estate jewelry, has closed for business. The store had been in business for decades, and was located on New Britain Ave. in Elmwood.
  • Another bank has chosen West Hartford as a key location. Savings Bank of Danbury plans to open in town later this month.
  • Eye glasses have become a major fashion statement. Solinsky EyeCare in West Hartford Center is having a trunk show on Monday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., featuring the latest designer frames.
  • Job hunting? Here's a link to some local businesses that are hiring based on ads they have posted on Craig's List.
