Stacey Tisdale Encourages Crowd of 350 to Examine the Real Cause of their Financial Behaviors

The real causes of our financial behavior have nothing to do with money,” financial journalist and keynote speaker, Stacey Tisdale, told the crowd of 350 women at YWCA Hartford Region’s Money Conference for Women on October 26. “There is always a lot more going on than dollars and cents,” she said.

Stacey explained that our financial behavior is caused by our money scripts – our unconscious beliefs about money that affect how we behave. She asked the crowd to examine the money scripts they blindly follow. She encouraged everyone to not let their personal scripts define them, but to think about them and then use them to make SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, reasonable and timely) goals. “Why is all of this important?” Stacey asked the crowd. “This isn’t a dress rehearsal – this is your real life,” she said.

Now in its 12th year the Money Conference for Women, hosted by YWCA Hartford Region and Honorary Chair, State Treasurer, Denise L., Nappier, offers help to women of all ages and encourages them to take charge of their financial futures.

“The economic challenges that women face are as tough as they ever have been.” State Treasurer, Denise L. Nappier, said at the Money Conference for Women. “We make less money and live longer than men.”

The Money Conference for Women is designed to address the unique financial challenges women face in their work and personal lives. In Connecticut, female workers are still paid, on average, only 74 centers for each dollar made by men for the same job. The wage gaps amounts to $443,360 of lost wages over a 40-year period of full time work. A woman would have to work almost 12 additional years to make up this gap. The discrepancy between income levels for women of color is even larger.

“After 12 years, we are proud to continue offering this free conference for women.” YWCA Hartford Region CEO Deborah Ullman said. “We tend to be more intimidated about financial issues, less informed about ways to secure our financial future and we are more conservative investors. That is why this conference continues to be a crucial resource for women in the Hartford area.”

YWCA thanks the sponsors who make this conference possible.  Presenting Sponsor: Prudential Retirement. Platinum Sponsor: Royal Neighbors of America & the Royal Neighbors Foundation.
