What I notice about the gaggle of sparkling little mermaid girls waiting next to me in the waves is that there is something raw, genuine and true about their joy in the sea. My joy, too. We're all bobbing up and down as we scan the horizon for our next ride, whether bodysurfing or boogie boarding.
Fittingly, the last thing I hear before the RRROOOOOOAARRR of my wave deafens me as I ride it to shore are the deep shrieks of unbridled joy of my fellow mermaids as they join the force of the ocean to catch their waves. They are, we are, wild things. Finding our way home.
Wait a minute. I know this feeling. It's the same sensation I have when I'm dancing. Something fundamental, natural, thrilling, and often, euphoric. If you watch a dancer who is "in the zone," you can see it. I'm not even talking about a famous dancer or one who is highly successful, whatever that means.
No, I mean a dancer who has merged with some profound surge of energy. As I'm writing this, I don't really even know if I can capture the experience verbally. Hmmmm. It's about connecting with and being carried, uplifted by, a hugely creative force.
It's incredible. Transformative and magical. Transcendent.
I am not the same person emerging out of the foam-covered remnants of the wave that I was when I dived into the watery swell. Just as I am not the same person leaving an epic class or rehearsal that I was walking into the dance studio.
What I also notice in my daily round is how the twinkle that illuminates children, if they're nurtured, dims or sputters or even goes out as people grow older. I think we forget or don't realize that we've got to tend to our own shimmering. Or we feel that it's selfish or not important.
Well, I'm here to remind you that it IS important. As important, perhaps even MORE important, than the flood of sensationalist headlines and personal to-do lists.
Because what I now know is that the alchemical recipe mixing me and my intention with that creative force contributes something new, unique, and alive. Just like the recipe of adding you and your positive intention with creativity--from gardening to innovating at your job, entertaining friends to walking on a new route, sprucing up your digs to learning how to play saxophone--results in something irreplaceable, ineffable. Truly magical.
It's why we're here. And if you don't do it, who will?
