CONARD WELCOMES OVER 80 COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES

The college application process is in full swing for seniors at CHS, and many juniors are getting a head start. This means filling out The Common Application, taking and retaking SATs, getting letters of recommendation from faculty, and researching their post high school options. From September through November, Conard's School Counseling Department and Career Center will welcome over 80 different college representatives from across the country. To date the visits number 43, and we are only halfway there. The weeks of October 7-11, and October 15-18, are particularly heavy with informational sessions given by admissions officers.

Is your son or daughter attending any school visits, and should they be?

The college search process is daunting, especially when so many of them offer unique and diverse opportunities for undergrads. Attending informational sessions at Conard will help your student narrow his search without dragging you all over the country. The bulk of visits to CHS are from schools in New England, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania; but we've already hosted Miami U (OH), Duke (NC), USC and Stanford (CA), and are expecting SMU (TX) and Reed College (OR) in the near future. Please check the Conard website or Naviance for all scheduled visits.

Aside from saving time and money, another benefit of attending the information sessions is for your scholar to introduce herself to the admissions officer. This is especially true if she is interested in a smaller school, or a school that has interview and essay requirements. The representative that visits Conard will likely be reviewing the application and reading the essays and letters of recommendation. Meeting the applicant in person helps a great deal in the selection process.

If your student's class schedule does not allow him to attend a visit, there is no need to worry. Many of the same institutions, plus many more, will be at the college fair on Wednesday, October 23, from 6:30-8:00 pm, at Conard High School. The fair is coordinated by the Capital Region High School Consortium, and is hosted in conjunction with Hall High School. Technical schools, two-year colleges, and military branches will also be among the 160 institutions represented.

If you have any questions regarding visits from college representatives, please contact Kim Davis in the Career Center.
