Autism & The Brain Body Connection

Autism & The Brain Body Connection

Autism is on the rise from 1 in 10,000 diagnosed in 1970 to 1 in 50 in 2008 to say there has been an uptick is an understatement. I will not go into the Autism cause, I believe and the research is showing many different factors. As a Doctor of Chiropractic I am not implying or suggesting that we treat or cure Autism, but instead offer as a method of removing neurological stress and allowing for more optimal expression to transpire.

Our reality is dependent on how we perceive information and NOT the information alone.

How do we perceive?

This is a big job for your brain, it has to process 11 Trillion bits of information daily.

Mechanoception, is your bodies way of sensing pressure, touch, vibration and distortion.

Nociception, is you bodies way of sensing harmful stimuli as: temperature, pressure, stretch of muscles, ligaments, and organs.

How else d o we perceive information?

  1. Sight
  2. Sound
  3. Taste
  4. Smell
  5. Hearing
What is Dysafferentation?

An imbalance of sensory information into the brain. This means that even though you may see a red car a person with Autism may see that red car and perceive it much differently. You both are seeing the same thing and yet the perception maybe totally different.

This is the Brain Body Connection, your brain must preceive the information from your senses to make a coordinated response. People with Autism suffer from perception integration error.

This is vital because your nervous system runs and coordinates everything in your body. From your breathing to making your turkey sandwich into eye tissue.

Where is the disconnect?

The part of the brain called the amygdala and fusiform, which is responsible for face recognition. Also people with Autism their brains develop much slower compared to people with out Autism and language pathways also differs.

What is Neuroplasticity?

Simply stated, your brain can rewire, readjust and relearn. Through these four steps, they are:

  1. Mental activity
  2. Creation of new neural structures
  3. Repetition of mental activity
  4. Strengthen neural connections
What does all that have to do with Structural Chiropractic care?

A structural Shift of your spine to an abnormal position creates neuroplastic changes in the central nervous system (brain/spinal cord) due to altered afferent input.

Your sensory system is not providing quality information to the brain. Bad information = bad results.

Dr. Jermey Schmahmanna, PhD of the Journal of NeuroPsy. had this to say;

"Movement of the spine stimulates the cerebellum, which is responsible for coordination of full body movement, thought, feelings, emotions and healthy functioning organs and immune system".

What next?

I reccomend that you come to our workshop on Tuesday sept 10th at 6pm to learn what we look for, and how we go about attempting to correct the abnormal structural shift of the spine that is affecting your child's nervous system.
