Fight fat with fat!


Before I get into the topic lets explore what people are currently doing. There are many ways to lose fat, just as there are many ways to cook an egg. Now, not all the ways to lose fat are healthy. For example I saw that an individual lost weight only by eating Twinkies, I saw another lose weight only by eating fast food at every single meal. Still others will lose weight by just drinking protein shakes. Others will take medications or supplements to help with fat loss.  Are all these ways healthy? No, most of them are not even close to being healthy.

A reasonable approach is best for long term weight management. 

We can all agree that fast foods, and junk foods should be dramatically reduced if you are attempting to lose fat. Many people when dieting also reduce good fats, because of the misguided notion that fats will make you fat.   Fat does not make you fat, simple carbohydrates make you fat.

Hydrogenated Fat

Not all fat is equal, not all fat is bad. Some fat is horrendous for good health.  Just to be clear, Hydrogenated and trans fat is horrible. You would dramatically stack the health deck in your favor if you avoided this man made fat. Because, it basically blocks Omega-3 (great fat) heart healthy properties and fat losing properties.

Monounsaturated fats typically found in avocado's, olive oil,  and nuts is a fat that has been shown to help people lose weight. Polyunsaturated fats, such as in tuna and salmon have the essential fatty acid Omega-3 which has been shown to also aid in fat loss.  Following a Mediterranean eating system would satisfy your good fat intake and minimize your bad fats. We advise our patients to include these fats in their meal plan. In fact, we have a few fitness competitors who eat fat at every meal and they are very toned women (and they are in their late 40's and 50's). They eat clean, no junk and they include monounsaturated  fat with every meal (usually avocados, olive oil and nuts).  These fitness models also add in polyunsaturated foods, such as salmon and tuna for the high Omega-3 essential fatty acids.

The take away is this:

To lose fat you must eat clean (no junk - not surprising) and eat healthy fats. This strategy works, is reasonable and is great for your health. Yes, you will lose weight without wrecking you metabolism.  Many people are metabolic resistant because of the abnormal dieting and calorie restriction, that weight loss seems impossible, mainly because they harmed their metabolism.

Using fats to fight fat is SMART.
