A Round-Up of Memorial Day Weekend Events

Parades, awards and ceremonies span the region.

AVON

State Rep. Tim LeGeyt, R-17th Avon and Canton, is honoring students from Thompson Brook School and Canton Intermediate School who placed in the Memorial Day Essay Contest at an awards ceremony on Saturday, May 28 at 9:30 a.m. at the Collinsville Savings Society.

Avon's Memorial Day Parade kicks off at 11 a.m. on Monday by the Towpath Annex on Simsbury Road and will conclude at the Veteran's Memorial at Avon Park South. The parade will stop along the way for services at the Avon Congregational Church Cemetery and the Prince Thomas of Savoy Club, from Old Farms Road to Columbus Circle. The Connecticut National Guard is flying over the parade at 11:15 a.m. Prior to the parade, the VFW and its Color Guards plan on visiting all Avon cemeteries at 7:30 a.m. to conduct memorial services.

CANTON

The Canton Memorial Day Parade will kick off from the Community Center on Dyer Avenue at 10 a.m. Monday. It will proceed down Dyer Avenue through Collinsville and end at Village Cemetery for a special ceremony. Along the way, a wreath will be placed on the Veterans Memorial on River Street.

GRANBY/EAST GRANBY

The Town of Granby will begin observing Memorial Day with a parade on Monday at 10 a.m.  The Route is from Geissler’s parking lot on Bank Street to Hartford Avenue and Salmon Brook Street (to drop off a wreath); Salmon Brook Street to North Granby Road (to drop off a wreath); Granby Cemetery for services; back out on North Granby Road to the Center Green.

The Annual East Granby Memorial Day Parade will begin shortly after 10 a.m. Monday with a remembrance ceremony at the Elmwood Cemetery on Nicholson Road. The parade will then proceed down Nicholson, cross Route 20 onto School Street, stop at the Center Cemetery, and then cross Route 187 to the town campus where there will be a short memorial service and a guest speaker from the National Guard. 

FARMINGTON

Two Memorial Day parades will be held on Monday, May 30.  The Unionville parade will form on New Britain Avenue and South Main Street at 10 a.m.  Farmington's parade will form at Garden Street and Farmington Avenue at 8 a.m.  The Unionville parade route will briefly stop at the War Memorial on Main Street for the laying of the wreath, and the parade will end at the Gazebo on Perry Street for traditional services.

SIMSBURY

The Tariffville Parade step off is at 9 a.m. Monday at Main and Winthrop streets ending at St. Bernard’s Cemetery. The Simsbury Parade step off is at 1:30 p.m. from Owens Brook Boulevard ending at Eno Memorial Hall.

SOUTHINGTON

A Memorial Day parade and celebration will be held Monday with the parade stepping off from the Derynoski School at 255 Main St. at 10:30 a.m. and proceeding down Eden Avenue and across Liberty Street before turning along Center Street and back to the Town Green. There will be a ceremony held at the American Legion, 64 Main St., remembering those who were lost while serving their country immediately following the parade.

WEST HARTFORD

A flag planting ceremony will be held at Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Volunteers are encouraged to attend and assist. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall at St. Peter Claver Church and will feature the singing group "Trilogy."

The town's Memorial Day parade steps off at 10 a.m. Monday from the corner of Woodrow Street and Farmington Avenue in a procession to Town Hall. A brief memorial service will follow at the West Hartford Veterans Memorial at Farmington Avenue and North Main Street.
