Burlington Man Charged with Killing Black Bear

Bear allegedly entered man's garage and backyard.

A Burlington man was charged on Tuesday with illegally killing a black bear, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

DEEP officials said in a news release that they were called to 4 Cobblestone Road, Burlington, at 7:30 on Tuesday morning after a resident reported hearing gunshots and then seeing a bear come into his yard and lay down.

After investigating, Cory J. Maitz, 42, of 6 Cobblestone Road, Burlington, was arrested and charged with illegally killing a black bear — a misdemeanor — and criminal possession of a firearm — a felony.

DEEP officials said it appeared that Maitz shot the black bear — a male weighing about 460 pounds — with a pistol after seeing it enter his garage and backyard. Both the bear and the pistol were seized as evidence.

Maitz was released and is scheduled to appear at Bristol Superior Court on June 4.

What a nut. If you are so anti-wildlife, then why on Earth would you live in a place like Burlington?

BLACK bears almost never attack unless they are in fear for their safety or their cubs, whether it's 60 pounds or 460 pounds. There is an ongoing study about black bears that can be viewed at www.bear.org. Take a look it's an amazing study.

I can't believe this idiot shot the bear. If he had food in the garage maybe he should keep the door closed and locked especially in that area. The bear would have left eventually or he should have called the DEP. There are more morons out there when it come to wildlife KILL KILL thats all they think about!

If it was 460# man that treatened him in his garage, it would have been OK. Get real .Who pays the taxes on that home? He has a right to have pistol in his home. Almost never attack, next time I'll call you to come just to be sure.

Interesting website...but it does not mention significant commonality in most black bear deaths which involve woman in their menstrual period, sitting on a lawn chair or rock while their significant other is fishing in the nearby stream or pond! See the Country Lane Collinsville bear (March 2012) here: http://vimeo.com/38537273

I had no food in my garage. I am not violent and I had a bear almost come in as well and let me tell you how scared you can be. It is easy to write your comments but until it happens to you. A 450lb animal is frightening. I was afraid he would come into my house.

Bears can rip through the roof of a car like a can of tuna. DEEP should be abolished. This man should be awarded a settlement by everyone on DEEP. Clearly this bear smelled something and wanted it. Obviously it is a tragedy to see something like this happen. Blame humans for encroaching on its territory... but seriously, it is an animal. It's not like he was just taking shots at it from his second floor while it was in his back yard. Who's to say it wasn't trying to break into his car or into his house through a door in his garage leading into his house? Who's going to pay when the bear causes $10,000 of damage? Some of you people make me sick. Oh yes, let that sweet, cute animal dance around in his garage. Do any of you know how much damage a 450 pound bear can do to small enclosed area? Typical madness from the environmentalists.

Bang a few pans together and the bear would have ran off. Once again lack of common sense wins.

If you were walking out your door with 3 little girls I think you'd think twice !!!! Give the guy a break ( and his constitutional right ) you all talk a good game but like i said, the day you are 5 or so feet away ( with one of your little girls next to you ) from a LIVE BLACK BEAR you'd sing a different tune.
