Coverage for 58 Types of Cancer Added for 9/11 First Responders, Survivors

Exposure to toxins at Ground Zero resulted in higher risk for cancer, an advisory committee said.

First responders, volunteers and surviving victims of the September 11 attacks in 2001 have suffered from a wide variety of illnesses and conditions caused by exposure to smoke and toxins at the World Trade Center site.

On Monday, the federal government added 58 types of cancer to the list of illnesses that will be eligible for coverage, according to cnn.com.

"The publication of this final rule marks an important step in the effort to provide needed treatment and care for 9/11 responders and survivors through the WTC [World Trade Center] Health Program," Dr. John Howard, the program's administrator, said in a statement Monday.

Those who meet qualifications — and the estimate is that 950 to 2,150 people will — could activate the coverage. Experts told CNN that cancer may develop decades after exposure.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg praised the decision on Monday.

"We have urged from the very beginning that the decision whether or not to include cancer be based on science; Dr. Howard's decision, made after thorough consideration of the latest available research and data, will continue to ensure that those who have become ill due to the heinous attacks on 9/11 will get the medical care they need and deserve," Bloomberg said.

Y're right sir...it collapsed just like 1 and 2, but never got its share of the press. I am sorry for the loss of your loved one(s) there and extend the condolence to all the 7 families.

I am happy for the WTC attack first responders finally getting coverage that they should have had from 9/12/2001 forward. Call me cynical if you like, but the timing of the announcement may be more motivated by political expedience than by compassion...

The acts of war on our embassies in Cairo and Benghezi (sp) were despicable and my sympathies go out to the families of Ambassador Stevens and all the other Americans killed. This is but the first fruits of four years worth of a foreign policy of appeasement by the Obama Administration. If we all don't wise up by election day, we will have been the ones responsible for unleashing more evil fruit. President Obama may be president of America, but he is in no way holding the interests of America at heart. His presidency has been the most traitorous I have seen in my lifetime, and perhaps the most traitorous in USA history. Obama is a passionate anti-colonialist and he sees America as evil colonialist empire that is hurting the world. His goal has never been hope and change for Americans, just change, and not for our beneft. As in bringing the nation he really hates, down to the dust. Though I don't believe that he was in any way responsible, the dust clouds made by the towers collapsing in 2001, makes for a perfect metaphor for Obama's agenda.
