Earth Day Events Coming Up

Local events to recycle your electronics, clean up Elmwood and otherwise go green in West Hartford.

Earth Day is April 22 but environmentally themed events are happening throughout the month in and around West Hartford:

April 2: Residential Electronics Recycling Collection
West Hartford residents are invited to bring their discarded electronics to the public works facility at 17 Brixton St. between 9 a.m. and noon. The town will accept computers, monitors, printers, cellphones, TVs, VCRs, copiers, fax machines, radios, stereos, telephones, electric typewriters, answering machines, copiers, pagers, modems, tape players, compact fluorescent light bulbs and rechargeable nickel cadmium batteries. No commercial items will be accepted.

April 6: Frank Horvat in Concert
Canadian pianist and composer Frank Horvat performs original music inspired by Earth Hour in a completely dark performance hall at the University of Hartford.  Admission is free.  Horvat's CD, A Little Dark Music, will be available for purchase at the show and 25 percent of the proceeds will go to the World Wildlife Fund. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at at the Berkman Recital Hall at The Hartt School, 200 Bloomfield Ave.

April 16: Elmwood Cleanup Day
The Elmwood Community Church will host Elmwood Cleanup Day from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet in the church parking lot at 26 Newington Road at 8:45 a.m. and  fan out to the surrounding streets for litter collection.

April 16: Community Shredding Event
The Shred-It van will be at The Investors Center at 70 East Main St. in Avon from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to shred sensitive documents at no cost. The event is sponsored by The Investors Center. All shredded paper will be recycled.

April 17: Garden Sunday at the Children's Museum
It's Garden Sunday at the The Children's Museum. Participants will learn about worms, bees and flowers.  They will also get gardening tips and paint a flower pot to take home with seeds and soil. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $11.

April 30: Hazardous Waste Collection
Residents of West Hartford and other Metropolitan District Commission towns are invited to drop off household hazardous waste at Farmington High School for safe disposal. A list of materials that will be accepted and other guidelines are available at www.themdc.com/haz10infopack.pdf. The collection will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the high school, 6 Monteith Drive in Farmington.
