Local Jeweler Designs Charm to Benefit Newtown Memorial Fund

After Dec. 14, 2012, Canton resident Stephanie May wanted to pay tribute to those killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School and help those left behind.

“Along with all of us in Connecticut and across the country and world, my heart broke on Dec. 14, 2012 when we lost 26 beautiful souls in the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut,” she said. “In the days and weeks to follow, I felt, along with so many others, that I needed to do something. I wanted to create a lasting memory of those lost on that horrific day.”

So May, who works in the family business at Mr. Trophy, LLC put her skills as a designer to work. She worked with Beth Philbin, owner of Heart on Your Wrist Jewelry to create a memorial charm.  

In the center on the front of the sterling silver charm is the symbol of hope, a lit candle, surrounded by the words, “Short is life but long is love.” The back contains the number 26 or optionally a personalized message. 

“My kids are what moved me to design the charm,” May said. “I felt an emptiness in my heart after the shooting in Newtown. Designing the charm and having the proceeds donated to the Newtown Memorial Fund was cathartic for me.”

May hopes it will serve as both a reminder and a comfort.

“We feel, this charm, which can be worn as a bracelet, necklace or keychain, is a beautiful keepsake so we will never forget what happened that fateful day, but hopefully learn from it and bring some peace to our hearts,” May said.
