Muammar Gaddafi Captured, Killed

Deposed leader of Libya believed to have played direct role in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, which claimed the life of West Hartford resident Turhan Ergin.

Deposed Libyan dictator Col. Muammar Gaddafi has been killed, according to published reports.

Libya several years ago formally accepted responsibility for the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, which claimed the life of West Hartford resident Turhan Ergin, a 22-year-old Syracuse University student. Although it is believed that he ordered the attack, Gaddafi himself denied involvement.

Turhan Ergin of West Hartford was one of 35 Syracuse University students returning from a study abroad program on Pan Am flight 103 when the plane exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland on Dec. 21, 1988. He was seated in seat 28C.

Ergin, the son of Dr. Michael T. and Florence Turgin of West Hartford, was a 1984 graduate of Kingswood Oxford. He was one of four children and was an accomplished athlete and participant in many other activities, according his biography on Syracuse University's "Remembrance Scholars" website.

On Syracuse's remembrance page, he was described by his parents as an "Actor, singer, dancer; accomplished athlete; fun loving, with a great sense on humor; filled with joy of life; fiercely devoted to his family and friends; comfortable with his world; 'always on stage, forever turned on by life'; sharing it all with others. 'Ergo'"

Turgin's father Michael died on Dec. 21, 1988, exactly 17 years after his son's death, according to his obituary.
