Suicide Rates on the Rise in Connecticut

Average is more than one per day.

The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is reporting that the state's suicide rates have been increasing over the past five years to more than one per day, according to the New Haven Register.

There were 371 suicides in Connecticut in 2011, representing the highest rate in the past 22 years when compared to previous figures reported by the medical examiner.

New Haven County had 99 suicides in 2011, followed by 87 in Hartford County and 64 in Fairfield County. Counties with smaller populations had lower suicide numbers: New London had 40 suicides in 2011, followed by 28 in Middlesex, 25 in Litchfield, 15 in Windham and eight in Tolland.

Last fall, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that in the U.S. among adults 18 and older in 2008 and 2009.
