West Hartford History: What Was This Used For?

Last week we asked: "Where Are These People?" and both Rick Liftig and Dianne Rechel both thought perhaps the image was taken in the Buena Vista area.

"My guess is that this is across from Reservoir 1 on the hill adjacent to Farmington Avenue (Buena Vista). Just my Monday morning guess. It looks to be about the size of a schoolhouse, but I don't believe there was ever one in that location," commented Liftig.

Rechel thought the building was perhaps where the West Hartford Art League is currently located.

Of course we also like John Hardy's answer about it being a line to get into the always-popular Hall Pops 'n Jazz, but that event had not yet been launched back in the horse and buggy days.

No one was correct this week. The official answer from the Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society is: "This image shows a group parents and students standing outside the old Northwest School. This one-room schoolhouse was once located on Albany Avenue west of Mountain Road. It had small windows and two front doors opening into small vestibules."
