Aging Care Academy: Essential Elements to Avoid a Nursing Home, Household Safety, and Community Resources

Presenters: Pamela Atwood, MA, CDP, CLL, Director of Dementia Care Services and Amina Weiland, CDP, QDCP, Coordinator of Dementia Care Services, Hebrew Health Care

This workshop reviews some elder care basics, and key points about caring for an older person. Six essential elements to avoid institutionalization are explored in detail: an accepting elder; financial viability; willing/able caregiver; ensuring safety; manageable behaviors; medication and care management. Participants will also learn when more care would be necessary and how to identify which level of care would be appropriate while supporting the older adult at a maximum level of independence.

The Household Safety Council reports that nationwide, 58,000 Americans require medical attention due to household accidents every day; 55 of those people die, equating to 20,000 deaths annually and $21 million in medical trips. The good news is that most of these incidents are preventable.  This workshop will inform participants about the most common hazards in the home, and increase awareness about how to prevent the most catastrophic yet preventable events. For caregivers, this workshop is essential whether the person needing assistance lives in your home or independently in the community.  Topics covered include: fall risks, bathroom safety, fire prevention, medications and other common poisons, and safely storing emergency information.

The cost of the course is $20.00
