CONCORA Presents Great Music of the Russian Orthodox Tradition

CONCORA, Connecticut’s premier professional choir, will present a ninety-minute concert of great sacred works from the Orthodox tradition conducted by Artistic Director Richard Coffey in the acoustically-resplendent St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in West Hartford.

Many texts from the Russian Orthodox liturgy will be familiar because they are used in evening services known as Vespers, Evening Prayer or Evensong in other churches. CONCORA soprano Sarah Hager Johnston believes the music has broad appeal, “Strictly speaking, this is sacred music created for Christian worship. But in its evocation of another time and place so different from our own, with its beauty and eloquence, this is music for all people. Anyone who seeks beauty and solace will come away from this performance delighted and refreshed.”

As Maestro Coffey tells it: “this ‘Eclectic All-Night Vigil’ permits CONCORA to sing some of our favorite, tried-and-true movements by Rachmaninoff (whose complete ‘All-Night Vigil’ we have often performed) and bring our audiences music of other legendary Orthodox composers they may not have heard."
