Emanuel Celebrates 95th Year

This 95th anniversary year will kick-off on Sunday evening, April 6th, when we showcase our values of Caring and Tikkun Olam/Repairing the World. Event co-chairs Sally Henowitz and Judy Mooney are planning a joyous celebratory evening which will honor two very important leaders of our B’Yadeynu (In Our Hands) Committee, Risa Davidson and Janet Wallans, along with Gloria McAdam, President and CEO of Foodshare. Seth Waxman (41st Solicitor General, United States) who like Risa was raised at The Emanuel, will be our keynote speaker. His topic is:  Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World): What the Emanuel Taught Me. Host for the evening will be Rachel Frank, meteorologist on FOXCT.

Risa Davidson has been chair of B’Yadeynu since 2003 and has co-chaired the committee with Janet Wallans since 2010. Under Risa’s leadership the committee has organized congregational responses to disasters around the globe, Chanukah drives for service men and women serving overseas, the Kol Nidre Food Drive and the Lillian Harris Turkey Drive. Collaboration with other faith-based organizations resulted in three consecutive years of the Harvest Festival, an interfaith event raising funds for Foodshare, and the annual Interfaith Hunger Seder at the State Capitol. In 2012, Risa assisted in launching Lotsa Helping Hands, a social media tool, to help raise awareness of volunteer opportunities within the congregation and beyond.

Janet Wallans has been a member of the B’Yadeynu/Social Justice Committee at the Emanuel Synagogue since its inception and co-chair since 2010 along with Risa Davidson. She has played a significant role on the committee by acting as liaison to other groups in the community such as the Save Darfur Coalition of CT and the Social Justice and Israel Task Forces of the Jewish Community Relations Council. She is currently working with organizations whose mission is to end the culture of violence in our community.

Gloria J. McAdam has served as chief executive of Foodshare since 1984.  Gloria has provided leadership to Foodshare's involvement in education and outreach efforts, advocacy on behalf of our hungry neighbors, building a stable base for the organization in the community, and the acquisition of a permanent facility from which Foodshare can work.

Seth Waxman is thrilled to return to the Emanuel Synagogue, where he grew up and celebrated his Bar Mitzvah, confirmation, graduation, and Auf Ruf. Seth was the 41st Solicitor General of the United States, has argued almost 70 cases in the United States Supreme Court, and many more in trial and first-level courts of appeal. He writes and lectures on constitutional law and history, civil rights, intellectual property, and advocacy, and has received numerous honorary degrees and awards for scholarship, public service, and advocacy.  Seth is a partner at WilmerHale, in Washington, DC where he chairs the Appellate and Supreme Court Litigation Practice Group, and serves on the faculty at the Georgetown University Law Center.

Rachel Frank joined FOXCT in October 2008.  A graduate of Pennsylvania State University, She received her bachelor’s degree in Meteorology with a focus on forecasting. She graduated with honors, as a member of Chi Epsilon Pi, the National Meteorological Honors Society. Rachel is a member of the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association.  Rachel won the 2011 Emmy for Best Weathercaster in New England.
