Susan Coleman, a professor of finance at the University of Hartford’s Barney School of Business, will talk about the increasingly important role of women in the economy onWednesday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. in Mali 1 Auditorium, Dana Hall, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Ave., West Hartford. The topic of women and the economy has frequently come up during the Presidential campaign and could impact who is elected on Nov. 6.
Coleman will focus her remarks on entrepreneurship and the growing number of women-owned business, as discussed in her new book A Rising Tide: Financing Strategies for Women-Owned Firms (co-authored by Alicia M. Robb, Stanford University Press, 2012).
Fox CT’s Rachel Lutzker will moderate the discussion, which will include questions from the audience. The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were 7.8 million women-owned firms in the United States in 2007, generating $1.2 trillion in revenues and providing employment for 7.6 million people. Stanford Press describes A Rising Tide as “presenting the financial strategies that have helped today's bold and creative women entrepreneurs to succeed.”
Susan Coleman is known for her extensive research in such areas as small business finance and entrepreneurial finance, with a focus on access to capital for women-owned and minority-owned businesses. She is co-founder of the University's Center for Personal Financial Responsibility, which promotes financial literacy among students.
Coleman has been quoted in a variety of newspapers, from the Hartford Courant to theWashington Post. She has also appeared in local television news stories.
