Olympic Gold Medal-Winning Coach and Title IX Advocate to Speak at the University of Hartford

Pia Sundhage, the two-time Olympic gold medal-winning former head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team (2008, 2012) and an advocate of Title IX, will deliver a lecture on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Lincoln Theater at the University of Hartford. The program is part of the University’s Rogow Distinguished Visiting Lecturers Program which brings celebrated lecturers to campus for students and the community. Sundhage’s lecture is presented with support from Newman's Own Foundation.

Sundhage was named head coach of Sweden’s Women’s National Soccer Team in September, 2012. Under her leadership, the U.S. Women’s team won two Olympic gold medals, went to the finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and compiled a record of 33-1-2. She is one of the most respected coaches in the women’s game and regarded as one of the world’s all-time-greatest female players, having won the Swedish Cup three times as a player and once as a coach. She was named Sweden’s Sportswoman of the Year in 2008.

June, 2012 marked the 40th anniversary of the passage of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. This landmark piece of legislation prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in federally funded educational programs. The passage of Title IX has benefited girls and women in athletics and all aspects of education.

The Rogow Distinguished Visiting Lecturers Program of the University of Hartford brings celebrated authors, journalists, historians, academics, and artists to the Greater Hartford area.
