Great Decisions : Turkey and its Prospects

Turkey’s challenges

Turkey: a nation at a crossroads, a bridge over an ever-growing chasm between the East and West. Turkey’s first Prime Minister Kemal Ataturk envisioned a modern, democratic nation-state built on the ashes of the Ottoman Empire with strong ties to Europe, not the Middle East.
But as the clashes between secular and religious groups and the recent protests in Taksim Square show, the soul of Turkey is still very much up for grabs.

Great Decisions meets alternate Sundays, 9 am to 10:15 am at the Meeting House. We spend about 30 minutes “around the table” raising issues that have come to our attention in the prior week. On March 16, we have a brief presentation on “Turkey's Challenges” and further discussion. People are welcome to drop in a bit late to contribute their 2 cents worth to the round table. The topics are selected from the Foreign Policy Assoc.'s Great Decisions program ( www.fpa.org ), and a brief introduction appears on that website. Contact Ed Savage (edsavage@ushartford.com ) for more information.
