Hebrew Health Care’s A Fresh Canvas Art Exhibit Inspires Those Dealing with Dementia

Hebrew Health Care’s art program, A Fresh Canvas: An Alzheimer’s Arts Program will be the featured exhibit in the Greater Hartford Arts Council’s gallery located at 100 Pearl Street in Hartford.  The art exhibit will run from April 7th to June 6th, Monday through Friday.  Along with the exhibit, there will be an opening reception on Thursday, April 24th from 5:00pm-7:00pm.  The reception is free of charge and is open to the general public. A Fresh Canvas exhibit demonstrates the boundless potential for ongoing human development despite physical, emotional or cognitive challenges.

A Fresh Canvas: An Alzheimer’s Arts Program provides creative expression through art therapy, music therapy and dance-movement therapy to people with progressive dementia in Hebrew Health Care’s skilled nursing unit and adult day center.  The goal of Fresh Canvas is to allow participants to use the creative process involved in artistic expression to resolve conflicts, develop interpersonal skills, reduce stress, and increase self-esteem and self-awareness. Fresh Canvas has been funded since 2005 by the Bella and Max Shulman Family Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford.

Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are reaching epidemic proportions.  Those involved in the therapy program embrace the unique individuality of each of the artists and deeply appreciate their courage to share their talents.  Hebrew Health Care hopes to ultimately reduce any stigma or fear associated with aging and the illnesses often associated with aging.  For more information about A Fresh Canvas or if you have any dementia related question, please visit www.agingcareacademy.org.
