Mandell JCC Celebrates the Jewish New Year With Free Family Tishrei Holiday Events; Fall 2013

The Mandell JCC will ring
in the Jewish New Year 5774with free events for the whole family, including
readings, tastings, and hands-on activities to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot
and Simchat Torah, at various locations and at the Mandell JCC, Zachs Campus,
335 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford, CT.



 



The High Holiday
festivities begin on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 with High Holiday
Tastings
at the Mandell JCC from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Stop by the Mandell
JCC Chase Family Gallery to celebrate Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) at Hands-On
Rosh Hashanah
, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and again from 4:30 p.m. to
5:30 p.m. Decorate holiday cards for family and friends, listen to PJ Library
stories, and hear the sounds of the shofar with Rabbi David Small of The
Emanuel Synagogue. On Thursday, September 5, at 5:00 p.m., enjoy apples
and honey at Beth David Synagogue, 20 Dover Road, West Hartford, at Big Tent
Rosh Hashanah
. Participants will then walk over to Trout Brook for a brief
Tashlich (Casting of Sins) service. This program is co-sponsored by Beth David
Synagogue, Congregation Beth Israel and the Mandell JCC.

Learn more about this
special time of the Jewish year at the High Holy Days Learners’ Service,
on Tuesday, September 10 at 7:00 p.m at Farmington Valley Jewish
Congregation – Emek Shalom, 55 Bushy Hill Road, Simsbury.

Begin the Sukkot (Festival
of Booths) celebrations on Wednesday, September 18 from 4:30 p.m. to
5:30 p.m. and on Friday, September 20 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.,
visit the Mandell JCC’s outdoor sukkah for Hands-On Sukkot, and make an
edible sukkah, and enjoy PJ Library stories and a Rick Recht sing-a-long. From
1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, stop by three different
Greater Hartford campuses (Mandell JCC, Community Services Building and Hebrew
Home - Zachs Campus; Hebrew High School of New England - Pava Campus; and
Hoffman Summerwood) to experience a sukkah open house, as well as refreshments
and activities for the whole family. The High Holidays wrap up on Tuesday,
September 24
from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Hands-On Simchat Torah.
Learn how the torah was written, listen to PJ Library stories and make an
edible Torah. Rabbi Michael Pincus, from Congregation Beth Israel, will stop by
with a real torah for everyone to see.
