Sonia Plumb Dance Company's "Shadows and Light"

Sonia Plumb Dance Company will premiere “Shadows and Light” at the Carol Autorino Center at the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, CT. at 7:30 p.m. on September 20 and 21 and at 3:00 p.m. on September 22, 2013.

Choreographed by Sonia Plumb, and performed by her Company of professional dancers, “Shadows and Light” focuses on light, darkness and the shadows in between. One of the pieces, entitled "The Moon," is based on a fairytale by the Brothers Grimm and features original music by Cory Gabel (the award-winning composer of Plumb’s last production “Water Wars”) and shadow puppets by David Regan (professional designer, performer and educator).

“’Shadows and Light’ will be an entrancing collaboration with local artists,” said Sonia Plumb, artistic director and choreographer. “In addition to exciting choreography, this production will captivate audiences with original music, beautiful costumes, entertaining shadow puppets…and a few other surprises. Even our collaboration with the University of Saint Joseph takes center stage, as student dancers perform a piece choreographed through our Artist in Resident relationship with the University.”

In addition to “The Moon,” this production includes three other premieres: “Sun Spinning” (inspired by dance pioneer Loie Fuller), “Fractured Light” (exploring the mix of light and dark of human emotions), and “Three By Three” (performed by students from the University of Saint Joseph). Performances also feature an “Encore Series” after each show, where local educators discuss related topics. Scheduled educators include the artistic team behind “Shadows and Light,” Susan Murphy from the University of Saint Joseph (speaking about Loie Fuller), and Erik Grimmer-Solem from Wesleyan University (speaking about the Brothers Grimm).

“Shadows and Light” is sponsored in part by The Ensworth Charitable Foundation, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee; the Greater Hartford Arts Council; and The Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Foundation.

Advance tickets are available through the University of Saint Joseph box office at (860) 231-5555 for $20/adults, $10/seniors and $5/students when purchased by September 15. (Add $5 per ticket for those purchased as of September 16 or on the night of the performances.)
