The Flight from Ambiguity:  Confucius, Coleridge, and Copenhagen - The Chinese philosopher Confucius lived amidst social turmoil. His response was to formulate an ethical  “middle way” between harsh punitive laws on one hand, and universal love on the other.  In our age we are witnessing a similar "flight from ambiguity" by fundamentalists of the Right – and of the Left:  those who misunderstand or fear uncertainty, paradox, chaos, and contradictions, and view them as problems to be fixed.  What are the merits of a world-view grounded in certainty?  What price may we pay?
