Iraq, known as ancient Mesopotamia
– the land between the two great rivers Tigris and Euphrates – was home to one
of the world’s earliest civilizations. To explore such sites as Eridu, Uruk, Ur
of the Chaldees, and Babylon is to trace the history of the first cultures to
build cities, invent writing, develop the wheel, and rule the known world.
Conquered by Persians, the Macedonian army of Alexander the Great, the armies
of the Islamic conquest, the Mongol hordes, and the Ottoman Empire of Turkey,
Iraq offers a compendium of astounding archaeological, historical, and
religious sites dating from ca. 4,000 B.C.E. to the present. Professor Keller
will discuss these points during her presentation noting that while Iraq has
experienced extended periods of war and turmoil, a sense of continuity
prevails.
