Volunteers Needed to Deliver Thanksgiving Meals in West Hartford, Surrounding Towns

Juniper House Homecare is preparing about 300 meals for homebound families in the West Hartford/Hartford/Newington area.

The Juniper House Homecare in Elmwood is preparing close to 300 Thanksgiving meals for people in the West Hartford/Newington/Hartford area.

The issue, according to Juniper President Andre Brel, is getting the meals to the residences.

“It’s just a couple of hours [from about 10 a.m. to noon],” Brel said in a telephone interview. “It’s all local delivery. It’s nothing too extensive.”

According to Barbara Roberts, volunteer coordinator for the town of West Hartford, “the number of meals delivered has increased drastically this year.”

Last year, Brul prepared 200 meals; he said that he expects to have that number increase to 300.

“We have quite a few people who get meals from us,” Brel said. “We don’t have enough volunteers.”

Roberts said that the "Town of West Hartford’s, Department of Human and Leisure Services appreciates Juniper House for preparing all the meals for people that might not have had a hot festive meal on Thanksgiving Day. We also give thanks to all the volunteers that take time out of their own holiday to bring a little cheer and a visit to those who are alone on this day. We appreciate their kindness as do those who receive the meals."

Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to call Brel at 860-922-4466.
