On June 21 of this year, Malcolm Casway celebrated 50 years of marriage with his wife Julie. Casway was a former assistant football coach at Hall High School in West Hartford.

The couple moved to Florida but he never forgot his Connecticut ties and wanted to share this moment with his Constitution state pals.

Julie was at Rider College in Trenton, N.J. She had a car at college and one of her sorority sisters asked her to take her to a beauty supply place in town. It happened to be my parents’ store.

While the girl looked around, my mother struck up a conversation with Julie. When my mother asked Julie where she was from, she replied “West Hartford, Connecticut.”

To make a long story short, my mother told Julie she had a son and would she go out with him. Julie said yes and I called her the next day and we went out that week. I liked her from the beginning. I asked her on that first date, which was a Saturday, to come to our house on Sunday to meet my grandmother. She said she hardly knew me and wasn't coming.

By the end of the evening she changed her mind and came to our house the next day. That was the beginning of our relationship.

One year later we were engaged and the following year we were married at Beth El Temple.

The Secret to a Successful Marriage

Doing things together even if you don't have the same interests and listening carefully to what the other person is saying.

What do you love about your wife the most?

Julie shares my passion for Hall football and never missed a game. We play tennis three times a week now that we are retired. She loves college football. We attend the U games and sit in the former players box seats for all the home games. She is playing canasta and Mahjong with the ladies. She loves to swim.
