Horanzy Leads Hawks to Three Set Victory over UMass Lowell with 16 Kills

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The University of Hartford volleyball team opened the 2013 Volley in the Valley, hosted by Marist College, with a three-set (26-24, 25-15, 25-17) shutout of the UMass Lowell River Hawks on Friday night. Hartford was led by rookie Corinne Horanzy who finished with a match-high 16 kills.

Horanzy's second double figure hitting night was complimented by a .303 hitting average with six errors in 33 total attacks. Following Horanzy in leading the Hawks was senior Dionna Kirton who finished with seven kills while setter Jackie Tamburri and Lindsay Anderson each added four kills. Both Tamburri and Anderson finished with one error in six total attacks for a .500 hitting average.

As a team, Tamburri helped marshal the Hawks to a .286 hitting average, a season high for Hartford. Tamburri finished with 32 assists in the 42 total Hartford kills. As a team, Hartford suffered 16 errors in 91 total attacks, while holding the River Hawks hit .093 with 23 kills and 15 errors in 86 attempts.

Defensively, Hartford was led by Kirton who finished with 10 digs, the only player in the match to record double figure digs. Eleven of the 12 Hawks who played in the match collected at least one dig as Horanzy followed Kirton with eight and Tamburri and libero Paola Llerandi each added six.

The Hawks also finished with five total blocks, led by Tamburri and sophomore Chandler Goodwin who each finished with three block assists. Goodwin added a solo block to lead all Hartford players with four total.  

Hartford will play a pair of matches to close out the two-day Volley in the Valley tournament on Saturday beginning with the host Red Foxes at 12:30 p.m. The Hawks will then take on the Dartmouth Big Green at 3:30 p.m. to close out the weekend.
