Nwakamma Tabbed Preseason All-Conference by the America East

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The America East Conference has named University of Hartford junior Mark Nwakamma to its annual Preseason All-Conference team, which was unveiled by the league on Tuesday afternoon. The squad was determined in a vote by the conference's head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own players.

A forward, Nwakamma earned America East All-Conference First Team honors at the conclusion of the 2012-13 regular season after ranking among the league's top-10 in four different statistical categories.

The sixth Hawks' men's basketball player to earn first team accolades from the America East, Nwakamma put up monster numbers to help lead the program to one of its most successful seasons in recent history. Highlighting Hartford's list of accomplishments in 2012-13 are 10 league victories, the most since 2007-08, as well as a berth to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, marking the school's first Division I postseason appearance.

Hartford's leader in scoring with 14.7 points per game, Nwakamma finished his sophomore season as the conference's fifth-best overall scorer while ranking among the league's leaders in rebounding (5.5 per game), field goal percentage (47.5 percent), steals (1.4 per game) and blocks (0.7 per game).

During the 16-game America East Conference slate, Nwakamma was even more impressive, pouring in a league-best 16.5 points per game. In that stretch, the Leander, Texas, native scored in double figures in all but one outing and compiled seven games with 20 or more points, including a 22-point, 12-rebound effort in a home win over Boston University. Three of those 20-point performances came in consecutive outings, starting with the win over the Terriers and continuing with respective 22- and 23-point nights in wins against Binghamton and Stony Brook.

With 739 career points, Nwakamma is 161 points away from becoming the 24th 1,000-point scorer in Hartford history. In 62 career games, he averages 11.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 0.7 blocks per contest. Last month, he was also named to the College Sports Madness Preseason All-Conference First Team.

Joining Nwakamma on the 2013-14 preseason squad were seniors Dave Coley (Stony Brook) and Brian Voelkel (Vermont) as well as sophomores Jordan Reed (Binghamton) and Jameel Warney (Stony Brook).
