Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford volleyball team was one of 131 Division I teams to earn American Volleyball Coaches Association academic accolades as announced by the coaches organization on August 7. The Hawks are part of 623 total college and high school programs, both men's and women's, honored by the AVCA.

The AVCA honor comes after earning the highest team GPA among all 20 sports sponsored by the America East Conference with a combined 3.55 over the fall of 2012 and the spring of 2013 semesters. In addition 12 volleyball players were honored by the America East on the Academic Honor Roll with 10 of those named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll for achieving a grade point average of 3.5 or higher during the fall semester.

The Hawks were also one of seven Hartford teams who received NCAA Special Recognition accolades representing the top 10 percent of all programs in each individual sport. They were joined in earning NCAA Special Recognition distinction by the men's indoor and outdoor track and field teams, the men's tennis team, the women's golf team, the men's cross country team, the men's basketball team.

The Hawks were one of two America East programs to be honored by the AVCA joining the University of New Hampshire among the Division I honorees. Hartford was also one of just three teams honored among the Division I schools in the state of Connecticut joining Central Connecticut State University and Fairfield University.

The Hartford volleyball team will open its 30-match 2013 schedule on August 30 at the Canisius Invitational. The Hawks will play 16 non-conference match-ups in preparation for a 14-match America East conference slate with the top four teams qualifying for the America East Championship to be played at the home court of the highest seeded team.
